Emmerdale hit with Ofcom complaints after airing ‘distressing’ episode

Emmerdale fans have lodged formal complaints with broadcasting regulator Ofcom following a deeply disturbing episode featuring April Windsor (portrayed by Amelia Flanagan) that aired on Friday night.
The hard-hitting instalment saw the teenage character caught up in a horrific trafficking storyline, nearly being forced into prostitution by an older man as part of a county lines drug operation.
The shocking scenes unfolded as villains Celia Anderson (Jaye Griffiths) and Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) continued dragging April deeper into their sinister world, with the youngster appearing increasingly beyond rescue.
April has been peddling drugs for months on the ITV soap, accumulating enormous debts that have left her vulnerable to exploitation.
Viewers found themselves divided after the episode aired, with some applauding the powerful storytelling whilst others switched off in disgust, reports the Express.

One frustrated fan declared: “This is dire, I’m switching off #emmerdale.”
However, another praised the cast’s performance, writing: “Tonight’s episode was very good. Everyone did an amazing job!!”
A third viewer acknowledged the difficult subject matter, commenting: “That scene right about the break was incredibly distressing. Well done, April, for getting away.”
One concerned parent expressed their unease, stating: “I just had a chance to watch Friday’s episode. I have to say I found it very disturbing and way outside of the usual Emmerdale type episode. I know things like this need to be highlighted, but this was over the top, in my opinion, for a 7:30 p.m. show.”
Another viewer wrote: “I think I may stop watching Emmerdale as I found this evening very disturbing for April. When will it end?”

Publishing its most recent data, an Ofcom representative informed express.co.uk that the complaints “related to the April Windsor storyline appearing pre-watershed”. The episode broadcast at its regular 7.30pm slot on ITV and ITVX.
The broadcasting regulator received a total of 62 complaints regarding the particular episode.
